Exploring the Paint Mines: A Colorado Adventure

If you find yourself near Denver or Colorado Springs, we highly recommend making the drive out to the Paint Mines.

Exploring the Paint Mines: A Colorado Adventure

Good morning! Erin and I, along with our little adventurers, are out exploring our new home state of Colorado. We’ve been settling in around Colorado Springs, but today we’re venturing out about an hour to the east to visit a truly unique spot: the Paint Mines Interpretive Park in Calhan, Colorado.

Getting There: A Scenic Drive

After a short drive, we arrive at the park, where there are a few parking lots to choose from. We parked in the furthest lot, eager to walk down a trail that promised incredible views. It’s called the Paint Mines because the area features colorful rocks and dirt that have been naturally stained by minerals over time. The rocks are quite soft and easily eroded, similar to the Badlands.

As we hiked along, we could already see the brilliant colors peeking over the ridge. We couldn’t wait to see more, so we kept going, excited for what was to come.

The Colorful Landscape: Nature’s Artwork

Once we made our way down the path, we were greeted by vibrant hues of pink, yellow, and orange rock formations. The colors were breathtaking! As we walked deeper into the park, we saw these beautiful rainbows of colors streaking across the landscape. The kids were especially excited about the bright, natural palette that stretched out before us.

We quickly realized we could’ve parked in a different lot closer to the formations, which would’ve saved us some time on the trail. However, we’re glad we took the longer route since it brought us through more scenic views and a loop that eventually led back to our car.

Nature's Fragility: The Paint Mines’ Delicate Beauty

The landscape here is so unique, but also so fragile. The rocks are incredibly soft, and we could see how the rain had washed away parts of the formations. Even stepping lightly on the ground caused small pieces to crumble away. It was a good reminder to stay on the trail, follow the Leave No Trace principles, and treat these wonders with respect.

We noticed purple and magenta tones in the rocks as we continued down the trail, and we made sure to keep our distance from the formations to avoid causing any damage.

Family Fun: A Perfect Spot for Kids

One of the best parts about the Paint Mines was watching the kids explore. They loved discovering all the different colors, imagining they were part of a landscape from a science fiction movie (Ben even joked about a "Star Wars trench run").

It’s always a joy to see their creativity sparked by nature’s wonders. For us, it’s a reminder of how important it is to expose our children to these kinds of places—both for fun and for education.

Tips for Visiting: Make the Most of Your Trip

If you’re planning a visit to the Paint Mines, here’s a quick tip: the first parking lot you’ll come across is much closer to the formations. It’s a bit of a steep hike, but it’s a much shorter walk to the rocks. If you're up for more of a hike, like we were, you can park at the upper lot and take the longer trail for a more scenic route.

For those looking to extend their trip, the nearby town of Calhan has an RV campground that’s only about five miles from the Paint Mines, making it a convenient place to stop over for a night or two. We didn’t have time to check it out, but it’s definitely something to consider for future trips.

Wrapping Up: A Beautiful Day in Colorado

The heat was starting to get to us as we made our way back to the van, but we were all feeling satisfied after an amazing hike. We wrapped up with some cold water and snacks and headed back to Colorado Springs, already looking forward to our next adventure. Colorado’s diversity never ceases to amaze us, and we can’t wait to explore more of its beautiful, unexpected corners.
